An excursion to Villgraten Valley is “living with and in nature”. The dark wooden farm buildings are perched high above the valley, like big eagles’ aeries. Every slope, no matter how steep, every piece of land, no matter how small, is mowed, often by hand, because it is too steep for machines. Since time immemorial, the people of Villgraten have exercised resourcefulness and frugality, diligence and tenacity to uphold an alliance of convenience with nature, to the benefit of both parties. This gave rise to and preserves one of the most pristine natural and cultivated landscapes in the Alps. The sheep belonging to “Villgrater Natur” fit well in this valley. They are frugal and tenacious. Mountain farming assertively maintains its place in a concept that has quite simply turned its back on mass tourism. “Come and visit us. We have nothing.” Very few tourism managers would ever have believed that this would entice visitors to come to Villgraten Valley. Yet more and more people seek out the simple beauty of days gone by. We residents of Villgraten are proud of our valley and will go to great lengths to preserve this exquisite, incomparable natural landscape.
